Introduction to Schweser Study Planner from Your Level Manager

2008 Level 1 CFA Candidate and Valued Schweser Customer:

First of all, I'd like to thank you for purchasing the 2008 Schweser Study Notes.
All of our Study Notes customers also receive this new product called Schweser Study Planner at no extra charge. We've designed it to help you create an effective and efficient study program that fits your learning style. There are a total of 95 "lessons", each including one or more specific assignments. The optimal plan would be to do five lessons per week for each of the nineteen weeks leading up to exam day.

I recommend allocating on average AT LEAST 3 hours per lesson (or a total of 285 hours), although many successful candidates will study even more than that. Note that the weekly work is often "front loaded", with more time required for the lessons early in the week. If Saturday and Sunday are going to be your bigger study days, just set your week to start on Saturday. Use your own best judgment as to how much you can accomplish in a given week. Some weeks, as is to be expected, you will not reach your goal because of obligations at work, to your family, or in your community. Make sure that you make up this time in subsequent weeks.

But whatever you do, don't let up! Staying on track is crucial to your success on exam day. You should start studying early in the season, and keep up the pace by studying every single week until exam day. Don't fall into the trap of putting things off and waiting until the last month/week/day to "cram". That's a guaranteed recipe for disaster.

The underlying philosophy that guided the creation of each assignment is "LEARN • PRACTICE • RETAIN™". For example, I might suggest that one day you read the review of a specific topic in the Study Notes and answer the Concept Checkers. Over the next few days, as you're also reading new material, I might also recommend that you review the material from the first day using the flashcards or by taking a practice exam in SchweserPro™. The idea is to do more than just read something once and assume you know it well enough. Continually revisit "old" concepts and test your understanding of them using different study products. This creates a kind of feed-back loop: read the material, test yourself, carefully and honestly assess what you understand and what you don't understand, reread the areas you're weak in, and test yourself again. If you do not write on the Concept Checker pages, but keep a record of those you miss, you can easily check yourself again on these until you are comfortable with all of them.

For each Study Session, study it as if you will not get a chance to go back to it and need to get it clear and get it correct right now. This will improve the intensity and efficiency of your learning.
I recommend that you start out by following the suggested schedule closely. However, after a few weeks, you will likely develop your own routine by adopting the suggestions that work best the best for you and discarding the ones that don't work. My goal in creating this product is not to schedule every last minute of your study time, but rather to provide an example of one type of study program, and allow you to adapt and refine it to best suit your needs. The most important things for success are to have weekly goals, to stay on track, and to study with purpose and intensity. I hope the Schweser Study Planner helps you to achieve all of these.

Best Regards,

Dr. Doug Van Eaton, CFA
